Sermon Passage: Romans 6:15–23
Sermon Title: Slaves of Righteousness
Sermon Big Idea:
God’s grace has transformed every believer making us slaves of righteousness. When obedience feels impossible, our feelings are wrong. Through God’s grace and the Holy Spirit’s power, every genuine believer can obey Christ from the heart. This truth gives us confidence to continue to grow as believers.
To live as slaves of righteousness, believers must understand three key truths: whom we serve, where obedience comes from, and the basis of salvation.
Sermon Points:
Our Master – Everyone Is a Slave to Sin or Righteousness
Our Heart – Obedience Flows from the Heart
Our Salvation – Salvation Is a Free Gift through Faith

Paul says that everyone is a slave either to sin or to righteousness. In what ways do you feel trapped by sin? Since you have become a believer, how have you seen “slavery to righteousness” work it’s way out in your life? How do the following passages help us think about these things? (Rom 6:15-16; Ezek 36:26-27; John 8:34-36; Gal 5:16)
One of the best ways to stop a particular sin is to figure out what righteous thing should be done. How does doing the right things help us avoid doing the wrong things? What sinful habit, attitude, or pattern do you need not only to stop, but to replace with righteous actions? (Rom 6:19, 22; Col 3:5-14)
Romans 6:17 says believers become “obedient from the heart.” What do your daily choices reveal about what you love most? How can you cultivate greater love for Christ so that obedience becomes more joyful and natural? What acts of obedience bring you the most joy and are most satisfying to you? (Rom 6:17-18; John 14:15; 1 John 5:3)
Romans 6:21 asks, “What fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed?” Looking back on your life, what consequences has sin produced? How do the following passages encourage you to learn from past failures instead of repeating them? (Rom 6:21; Prov 5:11-14)
Romans 6:23 contrasts the wages of sin with the free gift of God. When you struggle spiritually, are you more likely to try harder in your own strength or depend on God’s grace and walk by the Spirit? How does depending on God’s grace help us be obedient? (Rom 6:22-23; Gal 5:18-25)
